New team merger

Last week we used CulturalRally, one of our training tools to foster the development of a new team due to a merger.

We set the stage to provoke a cultural clash, to witness how the participants reacted and see how they reached agreements to find their way.

At each of the tables, three or four people were warming up by practising with some dice and learning the rules of the dynamic, the objective was to win as many chips as possible.

After a while, the written rules were withdrawn and they were no longer allowed to speak again; the real game was about to begin.

After the first round, we asked the winner of each group to change tables, taking all their chips with them, however, what no one knew was that each table had slightly different game rules.

Unable to speak, agreements suddenly had to be reached in the face of such a strange situation, for example by learning the new rules or “importing” their own. A “cultural” clash that was a real revelation, as the participants experienced what it feels like to be in a new environment and what is needed to adapt.

A powerful way to work on intercultural communication with new people and foster an understanding of the external culture, because explicit and implicit rules are the expression of a company's culture and regulate how we live with others.
