The term “L'Empordanet” was an affectionate invention of the writer Josep Pla, a territory of gentle topography from the massif of Montgrí and the Vall d'Aro to the Gavarres and the coastline, with the Medes Islands as an impassive witness.
L'Empordanet has a special charm that is formed by a constellation of medieval villages of living stone, with Romanesque architecture, irregular layouts and a play of light and shadow in its streets, full of small, charming, well-kept squares.
Last Wednesday, we enjoyed it again, visiting some of these hamlets via rural dirt and tarmac paths, with no technical difficulty and suitable for touring bikes.
We finished the day by visiting the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, at the foot of Montgrí, where we were able to enjoy a paella in the picnic area they have built in an old stone corral, ideal for cooking and making fires all year round.
