Saint Lawrence of the Muga

You're not an Empordà fanatic if you haven't been to Sant Llorenç de la Muga, a village located in the upper Muga valley, in an area also known as the Mountain Empordà Hello Garrotxa d'Empordà (due to its mountainous terrain).

After almost a year settled in this area, having been driven here by the pandemic, the time has come to right a wrong and visit this town in l’Alt Empordà, far from the crowded traditional tourism of the towns and coves of the Costa Brava.

The urban centre is situated in a pronounced meander of the River La Muga, which flows through the municipality. The wall protects a triangular-shaped enclosure with three entrance gates and four towers, and both the walled enclosure and the houses in the old town are notable for their good state of medieval preservation, offering us many corners that transport us to another century.

More surprises: the Old Bridge, A supremely romantic three-arched construction, dating from the same period as the walls, the delicate and charming Hermitage of Saint Anthony, and the irrigation canal that crosses the northern part of the walls and which still has public washhouses.

A gem on par with Besalú, Rupit, or Peratallada.
