The Muga is a Pyrenean river that flows into the Gulf of Roses after a 58 km course. Taking advantage of the good weather during our recent visit to Sant Llorenç de la Muga, we undertook a trek through the Gorgues d’Albanyà, an activity that involves descending the river by hiking or a simulated canyoning descent.
This is a mini adventure of a playful nature, ideal for tackling as a family, with friends or as a corporate group (the latter when possible, of course). The river, at this time of year, flows with a generous volume as a result of the initial snowmelt, maintaining clean and crystal-clear waters. A beautiful route through a forest of chestnut trees, holm oaks and meadows, with a multitude of emerald-green pools.
The difficulty level is low, qualifying the activity as water trekking, ideal for taking the little ones along. We descended the river by swimming, sliding down natural waterslides, walking, and jumping. The big difference compared to traditional canyoning is that ropes or harnesses are not needed, and furthermore, the more daring jumps can be avoided.
