Sometimes, the coolest things are right on our doorstep, and that's precisely why we don't know about them.
On Saturday, we organised a Family Day on one of the most magical mountains that exist, undoubtedly of special significance to the Catalan people. A perfect experience to involve the little ones, and that's how we offered it to our client when they asked us to organise something unique for the team and their families.
The Montserrat massif hides more than 100 caves within it, but we visited Les Coves del Salnitre, located in Collbató, the only one that allows for a 500-metre-long underground walk with tourist facilities.
Saltpetre is a mineral formed by the accumulation of droppings from the many bat colonies that inhabited the caves; the decomposition of the droppings on the limestone rock eventually formed this precious mineral.
After leaving the car in a car park near the caves, we had to climb the 286 steps up the hillside, a toll that must be paid to enjoy this captivating landscape that is well worth discovering: chambers, passageways, galleries, waterfalls, stalactites, stalagmites, columns, all explained meticulously by guides.
We were told that Montserrat is a mountain steeped in mystery and magic, and that, like any self-respecting cave, this one also has its legends. It seems that here, with the imminent arrival of the French, Mansuet Boxó, a blacksmith from Collbató, took refuge. Once discovered, Mansuet dropped a copper cauldron into a well, which, every time it struck the walls, made the cave resound, as if the mountain were collapsing. This caused the French to flee Collbató in fright.
