The Magic Rod – Easy? :-S

The Magic Rod

Inspired by the well-known Magic Bamboo, we've created a new version of this coordination challenge. While the original version (7m long bamboo) was difficult to transport, our Magic Rod disassembles into 4 aluminium parts, making it practical to carry. It's like going camping: “Oh, you're going camping! But where's the rest of your tent?” Thanks to its variable length, it easily adapts to groups of different sizes (from 6 to 22) participants. Definitely a must-have for your next workshop!

How is it done? The participants form two lines, facing each other. The facilitator places the Magic Wand on the participants' index fingers, gently, but without pushing it down. The team's task is to lower the wand to the ground. The only rule is to observe and never lose contact between their fingers and the wand. But, on the count of three, the facilitator lets go, the wand starts to rise instead of fall, as if it had helium! The reason: by trying to stay in contact with this large, lightweight weight of the wand (thanks to a special aluminium alloy, which weighs only 200 grams for its 4-metre length), each participant pushes up slightly. All the others follow this movement, so the wand rises instead of falling. The keys to overcoming the challenge are detailed planning, concentration, self-organisation and leadership.

In the Magic Wand instructions, you will find other usage suggestions.
