My father was a traditionalist, and from a young age I heard his theory that red wine should be from Rioja, rosé from Navarra, and white from Penedès. And so I was introduced to wine through the fine wines made in these regions.
What happened is that over time I wanted to delve deeper and in my introductory courses I learned a couple of very basic things:
Wine is made in almost every part of the world.
Secondly, what you don't like might be enjoyed by someone else, so avoid saying a wine is bad.
So, over the years, one learns by tasting the wines from the lands one visits, as they are the perfect combination of the land, tradition, and culture of that area, which is known by the term “terroir”.
However, I must admit I was absolutely thrilled when last week we were asked to organise an exclusive Rioja tasting. It felt like going back to the very beginning, to that nascent fascination with the world of wine, that desire to venture into the most classic of our country's Denominations of Origin.
And if, on top of that, our client, who is a regular every year, invites us to participate as one more member of the team, well, here I am enjoying and educating my palate thanks to the expertise of an expert in this classic and wonderful region.
