On Saturday, we participated in the Oncotrail, assisting the Cames Ajudeu-me team, a really, really cool experience.
This race, which aims to raise funds to improve the quality of life for cancer patients, is a 98.23 km course divided into 10 stages, with a positive elevation gain of 3,353 m. Each team must register a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 athletes, and each leg must be run simultaneously by a minimum of 4 members.
The sentiment between the teams is one of absolute camaraderie and solidarity. Some know each other from previous editions and the atmosphere couldn't be healthier. It's not a competition to get there before others; at most, people try to beat their own time from last year.
Among the team's athletes, there's spectacular teamwork, each with a role according to their strengths, where 'if you don't get there, I will', with runners seeing fatigued teammates and deciding to cover their section... pure teamwork.
Then there is the most important thing: each team must make a donation of at least 1,000 euros to the Girona Oncology League Foundation. There was one team that showed up with a giant cheque for 8,000 euros! This year, 270 teams have registered… do the maths… very important solidarity funds where the administration cannot reach.
