The Pletera

Sometimes the will of the people halts unreasonable initiatives... unfortunately, on very rare occasions.

In 1983, urbanisation was approved on the L'Estartit marshes around the mouth of the River Ter. The objective was to build La Pletera, a beachfront development, with the aim of turning it into a tourist attraction on a par with Platja D'Aro.

In 1986, construction began and tonnes of rubble were dumped to bury the marshes of high environmental value.

In August 1988, thanks to popular mobilisation, the project was halted, initiating legal proceedings between the construction company and the local council.

Finally, in 1998, the land was declared non-developable, but the wetlands had already been devastated by the initial stages of construction.

In April 2015, work began to clear the debris thanks to the EU's Life programme, an ecological regeneration initiative, pioneering in the Mediterranean.

And, since 2018, we have once again been able to enjoy the Aiguamolls del Baix Empordà in their original state, with refreshing walks along the beach and the Gola del Ter, although we must not forget that it was public pressure which, at the time, brought that predatory development project to a screeching halt.
