Legend has it that the Count was a feudal lord who mistreated his vassals, while also being a swindler and a pleasure-seeker, and who spent his days seducing maidens. Legend has it that he seduced the Abbess of San Joan, who fell in love with him, and he convinced her to go to the woods on horseback with his hunting dogs. The next day their bodies were found torn apart by the Count's own dogs.<\/p>\n

Be that as it may, the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses was founded in the year 885 by the then Count of Barcelona and Girona, Wifred the Hairy, for his daughter Emma, who governed a community of Benedictine nuns, with the purpose of helping to repopulate the area recently conquered from the Muslims. <\/p>\n

Emma became the abbess of the monastery upon the count's death, a position she held until the year 942. Ingilberga was the last abbess, and her tenure ended in 1017. It appears that the reason for the dissolution of the community was the scandalous behaviour of the nuns, a fact related to the legend of Count Arnau, the one who was devoured by his own dogs.<\/p>\n

So this weekend we escaped to Sant Joan de les Abadesses, a beautiful town in the Ripoll\u00e8s region, with endless cultural richness, a place where you immerse yourself in the past, a cocktail that combines history, landscape, and art.<\/p>\n

A perfect location situated right in the centre of the Pre-Pyrenean Alto del Ter valley, offering access to numerous trails of varying difficulty and, moreover, keeping the 14 km \u201ccarrilet\u201d iron route in excellent condition for cycling. It's a pleasant, gently sloping route continuously flanked by vegetation, connecting Sant Joan with Ripoll.<\/p>\n
