Legend has it that, on one occasion, King Peter III the Ceremonious came to visit the church works, and the horses of the entourage, very nervous upon arriving at the tower, refused to cross the entrance door.<\/p>\n

Torroella de Montgr\u00ed is one of the medieval towns of Empord\u00e0, a borderland between the county of Barcelona and the county of Emp\u00faries during the Middle Ages, a dispute that caused the incomplete construction of the castle.<\/p>\n

Two outstanding elements are still preserved: the Portal de Santa Caterina and the Torre de les Bruixes (Witches' Tower), as witches did indeed exist in the Middle Ages, and it seems they used to gather around this tower.<\/p>\n

Later, when the king met with the local authorities, it was decided to wall up the entrance cursed by the witches. However, the following Saturday it reappeared, after which it was walled up again, and the same happened on subsequent Saturdays\u2026 so they decided to guard the tower by posting a pair of soldiers\u2026 who were never seen again!<\/p>\n

At some point the witches must have left Torroella, as the old passage through the wall is open, but be warned!... it's not recommended to visit this place on Saturday nights.<\/p>\n
